This plate shows the high light of the Craighill Channel range in Chesapeake Bay, one of the paired markers that guided ships through a dredged channel in the bay's shallow waters. Two lights were set one above and behind the other so that a navigator who kept them aligned stayed in the safe water. The image appeared in the 1873 Annual Report of the U.S. Light-House Board, a federal publication that documented the country's aids to navigation. It was reproduced by the American Photo-Relief Printing Company of Philadelphia, a firm that turned photographs into printing plates for official reports.
