A government chart rather than a photograph, this 1896 outline map lays out the United States Light-House Establishment by its administrative districts and marks a handful of the most significant lights along the coasts and waterways. It was printed as a plate in the Annual Report of the U.S. Light-House Board for that year, where it helped readers see at a glance how the service divided its responsibility across the country. Maps like this were working documents for the Light-House Board, which oversaw aids to navigation before the service was folded into the Department of Commerce and Labor in 1903. Its simple line work makes it a useful window onto how the nation organized its coastal safety network at the close of the nineteenth century.
