Bergen Point, on the New Jersey shore where the Kill van Kull meets Newark Bay, was a busy stretch of water for ships working in and out of New York harbor, and this engraving shows the lighthouse that marked it. A.T. Sears signed the block as engraver, and the picture ran in *Harper's New Monthly Magazine* in March 1874, when the magazine was a leading outlet for illustrated travel and topical views. Because the image was made for a magazine page, it reflects the wood-engraving techniques of its day, with fine lines that give the tower and surrounding shoreline their texture.
