A lighthouse lens apparatus, the large cluster of glass prisms and lenses that focused a lamp's light into a beam, is the focus here, with a keeper or technician working on its mechanism. Such Fresnel lens assemblies were developed in France in the 1820s and became the standard for coastal lights through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Keeping them clean, polished and properly aligned was a daily task, since even small dust films or misplaced panels could dim a beam that ships relied on in fog and darkness. The picture offers a close look at the craftsmanship and routine maintenance behind a light that was often out of sight to passing sailors.
