Two figures stand on the narrow iron gallery that wraps a lighthouse, a railed walkway that let keepers reach the lantern room for cleaning and repairs and gave them a view of the surrounding water. Lighthouse galleries like this one were exposed, windy places, and keepers and their families often climbed them several times a day. Black and white photographs of such structures were common from the late nineteenth century on, and they capture the scale of the tower against open sky and sea.
