Few lighthouses share the story of Minot's Ledge, a reef off Cohasset, Massachusetts, where waves regularly broke over the rock. The first tower, a granite structure completed around 1850, was swept away in a violent storm in April 1851, and the keepers stationed there died with it. The disaster pushed engineers to build a sturdier replacement, and the picture shows the ruin of that first attempt at taming an exposed ledge on a coast that had already claimed many ships.
