Oswego's harbor light and the earthworks and walls of Fort Ontario appear together here, a pairing that shows how the town grew up around its lake port and its military post. The fort's site at the mouth of the Oswego River has been fortified since the 1750s, when control of the region passed between the French and the British. The Detroit Publishing Company made this view by photochrom, a process that built vivid color from a series of lithographic stones laid over a photographic base. The company bound prints like this one into albums kept as a catalog in its office, so the image was meant for reference as well as for display.
