Palmer Park's light house, a small ornamental tower set among the park's grounds, is the subject of this view, which sets it apart from the park's broader landscapes. The park was named for Thomas W. Palmer, a Detroit businessman and U.S. senator, and in the 1880s and 1890s it was a popular destination for residents seeking open green space and water views. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued thousands of views of American cities and landmarks around the turn of the twentieth century, recorded the scene on an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate negative. The date range comes from the company's 1899 catalog, which listed the view.
