White Island Light, on one of the Isles of Shoals off the New Hampshire coast, appears here on a postcard that carries a personal note. Newspaper correspondent Edmund Noble wrote it from the Hotel Wentworth in Portsmouth in August 1905 to his daughter Lilly, reporting that a group of Russians and Japanese had gone out to the islands that day. That summer, delegates from both countries were in the area for the peace talks that ended the Russo-Japanese War, and Noble, kept at the hotel, spent his free time on a walk to the beach. The record lists the picture as 1901, so the view may predate the card.

SubjectsPostcard sent by newspaper correspondent Edmund Noble to his daughter, Lilly. Text reads: Hotel Wentworth, Portsmouth, Aug. 20, 1905. Dear Lilly. A few of the Russians and Japanese went today on a special trip to the Isle of Shoals. They have (6 p.m.) just returned. Having to remain at the hotel, I contented myself with a stroll to the beach. With love, Pa.
