The Tillamook Rock Light was a first-order lighthouse, the largest class of Fresnel lens, set on a small basalt islet about a mile off the Oregon coast near Tillamook Head. Its lens was built to throw light far out over the Pacific, and the station was known to sailors as a hazardous spot, with its rock exposed to heavy surf. This 1881 view by R. M. Tabor shows the lens and tower that the station's keepers depended on in its first years. The island's isolation meant that supplies and keepers moved between the rock and the mainland by hoisting cable, so the station was as much an engineering feat as a navigation aid.
