Rather than the whole tower, this view focuses on the upper section of the Cape Hatteras light on North Carolina's Outer Banks, where the first-order Fresnel lens sat in the lantern room. Completed in 1870, the brick tower stands about 198 feet tall, and its black-and-white diagonal daymark, added in 1873, helped mariners identify it by day. First-order lenses were the largest class of Fresnel optic, built from many prisms and glass elements to throw a beam many miles out to sea. The light was needed because offshore shoals made the cape one of the most dangerous stretches on the Atlantic coast.
