The north tower is the subject here, one of a matched pair that marks Thacher Island, a rocky outcrop off Cape Ann on Massachusetts's North Shore. The twin towers guided ships into Gloucester and Rockport harbors, and the island's light station is among the oldest on the American coast. The photograph was made in 1869 by Hervey Friend, whose studio on Front Street in Gloucester produced a series of views titled "Cape Ann Views." Such studio prints were popular with summer visitors and captured the working coast as well as its scenic landmarks.
