This view turns to the south tower of the twin lights on Thacher's Island, the pair that guided vessels past the rocky approaches to Cape Ann. The two towers stood close together so that mariners could tell them apart from other lights along the coast, and they were a familiar sight to fishing schooners and coasting vessels working out of Gloucester and Rockport. Photographer Hervey Friend, whose studio was on Front Street in Gloucester, issued the image in 1869 as part of his "Cape Ann Views" series, which documented the harbor towns and their surroundings.
