Thacher's Island, off Rockport on Cape Ann, is known for its pair of lighthouses, and this view focuses on the south tower. The twin towers were first lit in 1771 and rebuilt in granite in 1861, so this 1869 photograph shows them only a few years after that rebuilding. Hervey Friend, a Gloucester photographer, issued the view as part of his *Cape Ann Views* series. Notice the exposed, rocky setting, which shows how isolated the keepers' station was at the edge of the open Atlantic.
