Thacher's Island, off the tip of Cape Ann in Massachusetts, carries a pair of granite towers, and this view isolates the north one. The photograph was taken around 1869 by Hervey Friend, whose Gloucester studio at 77 Front Street issued a series of views titled "Cape Ann Views," a commercial format that sold scenes of the harbor and surrounding coast to residents and visitors. Thacher's Island lights had guided fishing schooners and coasting vessels past the dangerous ledges of the Cape for decades, so the towers stood as a working navigational aid as well as a local landmark. Look closely at the stonework and the lantern housing, which show the sturdy, utilitarian character of nineteenth-century American lighthouse construction.
