Tillamook Head rises above the Oregon coast near Seaside, and the Hotel Moore once stood among the summer cottages and bathhouses that drew Portland families to the beach. Around 1914, resort hotels like this one catered to visitors who arrived by rail and steamboat for weeks at a time, lured by sand, surf and cool air away from the city. Seaside had been a fashionable getaway since the late 1800s, and its hotels shaped a leisure culture that brought many Oregonians to the ocean each summer. The picture is worth studying for its record of early coastal tourism, when a beach holiday meant formal hotel life as much as time outdoors.
