Seen from the north-east, this lithograph lays out Port Townsend on the Quimper Peninsula at the entrance to Puget Sound, with its harbor, streets, and waterfront spread below the viewer. Portland publisher E.S. Glover drew the view in 1878, and the San Francisco firm A.L. Bancroft & Co. printed it. Such bird's-eye views were popular in the late 1870s, circulating as promotional souvenirs that presented growing towns as busy ports. Port Townsend, then in Washington Territory, hoped to become a major shipping center, and this view reflects that ambition.
