Portland's skyline in the late 1890s was a low, crowded sprawl of brick commercial blocks and wooden houses climbing the west hills above the Willamette River, and this view, dated around 1898, captures that working city before the high-rise era. The handwritten name of Herbert A. Hale on the back suggests the print passed through his hands, though the record does not say whether he made the negative or simply kept the picture. Portland was then a fast-growing river port and rail hub, shaped by the lumber trade and by the Willamette and Columbia waterfronts, so a view like this doubles as a record of how the city's commerce and geography fit together.
