Mount Rainier, the snow-capped volcano in Washington State, rises above the Columbia River in this view, a vantage that gave travelers on the river a striking sight of the peak far to the north. The Columbia was the main water route through the Pacific Northwest in the nineteenth century, carrying fur traders, missionaries, and then settlers heading toward the Willamette Valley. Mount Rainier, at roughly 14,400 feet, was a landmark for those passing along the river, and views like this one helped shape how easterners pictured the far Northwest. Worth noticing is how the broad river in the foreground frames the distant mountain.
