Mount Hood rises about 11,240 feet above the Oregon Cascades, roughly 50 miles east of Portland, and it is the highest point in the state. The volcano is still considered active, with its last eruptive period dating to the 1780s and 1790s, though it has been quiet for centuries. Its snowfields and glaciers have drawn climbers and skiers for generations, and the peak has long served as a visual landmark for travelers and settlers approaching the Willamette Valley. Images of it often emphasize that contrast between a snowy summit and the forested land below.
