Rooster Rock is the subject here, a basalt bluff rising above the Columbia River in the Columbia River Gorge, east of Portland. Engraved views like this one were popular in the nineteenth century, when printmakers turned the Gorge's dramatic cliffs and falls into images for readers who would never see them in person. The rock's name, which came from its rooster-shaped silhouette, helped make it a recognizable landmark for travelers on the river. Worth noticing is how the engraver balanced the sheer stone face against the calm water below, emphasizing the scale that drew visitors to the region.
