Multnomah Falls drops about 620 feet in two main tiers, making it the tallest waterfall in Oregon and one of the most visited sites in the Columbia River Gorge. Benson Bridge, completed in 1914, spans the gorge partway up the falls and gives visitors a close view of the upper cascade. The falls became a major destination after the Historic Columbia River Highway opened in the early 1910s, bringing motorists along a scenic route past the gorge's waterfalls.
