Kettle Falls, on the Columbia River in what is now northeastern Washington, is the subject here, drawn as a color lithograph for the 1855 *Report of Exploration of a Route for the Pacific Railroad* led by Isaac Ingalls Stevens, then governor of Washington Territory. The painter, Stanley, was part of the survey party, and the lithographic firm of Sarony, Major & Knapp produced the plate in New York. Kettle Falls had long been a major salmon fishery for the Indigenous peoples of the region, and Stevens's expedition helped bring such places to a national audience during debates over a transcontinental railroad route.
