This drawing is tied in its record to a drawbridge in Tokyo and to foreign visitors there, a pairing that points to the years between 1850 and 1900, when Japan opened its ports to Western trade and the capital, then called Edo until 1868, saw more travelers from abroad. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e painter active from about 1764 to 1788, whose working years sit earlier than the subject dates. That gap suggests the 1750 date is a rough catalog estimate, so the subject matter and the artist's period are the more reliable guides to when and where the scene belongs.
