A drawbridge and foreign visitors are the subjects that set this drawing apart. The record places the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a period when Japan's ports and capital were opening to Western travelers after generations of tight restriction. The artist, Isoda Koryūsai, was an ukiyo-e printmaker active from 1764 to 1788, best known for elegant Edo-period images of women and everyday life, so the listed date of 1750 and the subject period do not line up neatly. Viewers may find the drawing most useful as a record of how the city's bridges and its visitors looked during that era of change.
