This drawing shows a drawbridge in Tokyo, a subject the catalog ties to foreign visitors to the city. The record dates the sheet to 1750, but its catalog subject range is 1850 to 1900, and the attributed artist, Isoda Koryūsai, is recorded as active from 1764 to 1788, so the date and attribution should be read with caution. The period the subject points to was one of change: after the United States and other Western powers opened Japanese ports in the 1850s, foreign residents and travelers became a more visible presence in Edo, renamed Tokyo in 1868. Drawings like this one record how Japanese artists saw those encounters.
