This drawing is particular for its subject: a drawbridge in Tokyo, with the catalog also tagging it with foreign visitors to the city. The record ties the work to the David Murray Collection of Japanese prints and drawings at the Library of Congress and credits the artist Isoda Koryūsai, who was active in Edo in the later eighteenth century. The dates in the record do not line up, since the 1750 date predates the artist's recorded working years, and the subject tags point to Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, after the city was renamed in 1868. Those gaps are worth keeping in mind when reading the sheet as evidence of a specific place and moment.
