The record points to a drawbridge in Tokyo and to foreign visitors there, subjects that suggest the late 1800s, when Edo was renamed Tokyo in 1868 and Western travelers began arriving in larger numbers. The catalog date of 1750 does not fit that setting or the artist's listed working period, 1764 to 1788, which is worth keeping in mind when reading the drawing. Isoda Koryūsai was an ukiyo-e printmaker and painter best known for images of women and scenes of daily life. The drawing is part of the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress, which holds a large group of Japanese prints and drawings.
