A drawbridge over a Tokyo waterway, with foreign visitors crossing it, sets this drawing apart, and the catalog places its subject in the late nineteenth century. The city was still called Edo until 1868, when it took the name Tokyo, and the years after Japan opened its ports in the 1850s brought a steady stream of Western travelers and traders into its streets. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist active from the 1760s to the 1780s, does not fit neatly with that later subject, and the 1750 date in the record deserves checking. The drawing is best read as a record of its subject, with the artist and date treated as provisional.
