Kara nishiki, the "Chinese brocade" style, refers to Japanese textiles that imitated the richly patterned silks imported from China, and these plates show how that visual vocabulary moved between East Asian workshops. Floral motifs such as peonies, chrysanthemums and lotuses were favorites in both traditions, often arranged in repeating medallions or scrolling vines. Set side by side with Korean examples, the plates invite comparison of how each culture adapted the same flowers to its own taste in color, spacing and outline. Look closely at the borders, where small differences in how the petals and leaves are drawn reveal the hands behind each design.
