A textile design built around a red ground, with white, yellow and blue flowers threaded through a network of scrolling lines, is the kind of pattern that drew printed cloth into fashionable homes during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Designs like this were often block-printed or painted onto cotton, where the bright dyes and the lively interplay of floral motifs and curling stems made the fabric suitable for hangings, quilts and clothing. The scrolls give the composition its rhythm, guiding the eye across the cloth rather than settling it on any single bloom. Watch how the repeated flowers shift in color against the red, a reminder of how much skill went into mixing and fixing dyes by hand.
