What sets this sheet apart is its pairing of a drawbridge with foreign visitors, two subjects the record ties to Tokyo. The record credits the design to Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist who was active in Edo between about 1764 and 1788, but it dates the sheet to 1750 and its subjects to 1850 to 1900, so the date is uncertain. The later range fits the years after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in the 1850s, when Western travelers and residents became a more common sight in the capital. Read it as a glimpse of a city in transition, with the bridge as its setting.
