A drawbridge and the foreign visitors who crossed it are the focus of this drawing, set in Tokyo. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist active from about 1764 to 1788, known for elegant prints of beauties and city life. The catalog date of 1750 falls before his known working years, so it is best read as approximate. The subject headings place the scene between 1850 and 1900, a period when Edo had become Tokyo and foreigners were a new presence in the city. Drawbridges were a traditional feature of the city's moats and canals, so the scene pairs an old urban landmark with a changing world.
