A drawbridge in Tokyo and the foreign visitors who came to see it are the subjects this drawing is catalogued under, which places it in the decades after Japan opened its ports to outside trade in the 1850s. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period artist active from about 1764 to 1788, but gives a date of 1750, which predates those working years, so the dating should be treated as uncertain. The drawing belongs to the David Murray Collection at the Library of Congress, and the gap between an 18th-century attribution and 19th-century subject matter is worth weighing when reading its history.
