This drawing is set on the drawbridges of Tokyo, a city that was still called Edo until 1868, and the record pairs those bridges with foreign visitors. The catalog dates are inconsistent. The record gives 1750, the artist is listed as active from 1764 to 1788, and the subject tags point to 1850 to 1900. That later span matches the years after Japan opened its ports to foreign trade in 1854, when Western travelers began to appear in the capital. Koryūsai is best known for ukiyo-e prints of the Edo period, so the attribution and the subject tags should be read together with some caution.
