Two subjects set this drawing apart: a drawbridge in Tokyo and foreign visitors to the city, both catalogued for the years 1850 to 1900. That span covers the final decades of the Edo period and the early Meiji era, when Japan's ports and capital opened to foreign trade and travel and Western visitors became a more common sight. The record credits Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e artist who was active from 1764 to 1788, but it also gives a date of 1750. That date fits neither the artist's working years nor the subject range, so the attribution and dating should be treated as uncertain.
