Drawbridges and foreign visitors are the two subjects this drawing is catalogued under, both placed in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a period that spanned the end of the Tokugawa shogunate and the city's renaming from Edo in 1868. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo ukiyo-e artist active from the 1760s to the 1780s, does not match the 1750 date given, so the dating should be treated as uncertain. Foreign residents and travelers became a familiar presence in the capital after Japan's ports opened to trade in the 1850s, and images like this one record that shift in daily city life.
