The drawbridge and the foreign visitors named in this record set this drawing apart from the many Japanese city views that share its period. The catalog places the scene in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a time when the city was opening to foreign residents and visitors after the treaties of the 1850s and the political upheaval that ended the Edo shogunate in 1868. Drawbridges like this one carried daily traffic over the city's canals and moats, so they appear often as neighborhood landmarks. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, whose known activity runs from 1764 to 1788, does not match the 1750 date, so that date is best read as a rough catalog estimate.
