Here the view is the Yokohama jetty itself, with its ships and harbor works, and Mount Fuji is included among the subjects cataloged for this sheet. This woodcut is one panel of a triptych, so it was meant to be seen alongside its companion sheets as a continuous scene. The record gives 1850, but Yokohama only opened to foreign trade in 1859, when it grew from a small fishing village into a busy port. Prints of its waterfront, with foreign-style vessels and new piers, became popular as the city changed, so the subject reflects that transformation as much as the artist's own period.
