Maple trees frame the view in this sunset scene from Hiroshige's Fuji series, which is what sets it apart from the other sheets in the set: the foliage sits in the foreground while Mount Fuji rises in the distance. Meguro lay on the outskirts of Edo, where hillside temples and open ground drew townspeople out to enjoy the evening light. Utagawa Hiroshige, a leading master of landscape woodblock prints, often used such places to show ordinary Edo life against Fuji. This is a color woodcut, but the catalog date is unclear, so its exact year is uncertain.
