This print sets a shrine gateway, a torii, against the water of Lake Chuzenji in Shimotsuke Province, a mountain lake in the Nikko region that pilgrims and travelers visited. It belongs to Hiroshige's series *One Hundred Famous Views of the Provinces*, and the record credits the carving to Matsushima Seikichi. Hiroshige died in 1858, so this 1859 impression was issued after his death from a design he had completed. The series shows how Edo-period printmakers turned regional scenery and religious landmarks into popular souvenirs.
