Suruga Miho-no-Matsubara shows the pine-lined coast of Miho on Suruga Bay, a place long celebrated as one of Japan's three great pine groves and prized for its view of Mount Fuji across the water. Hiroshige made it as number 24 in his *Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji*, a series produced in the late 1850s, shortly before the artist's death in 1858. Sailboats on the bay give the scene a sense of the working coastline, and the series as a whole shows how Hiroshige placed Fuji within ordinary landscapes rather than treating it as a distant monument.
