The catalog links this sheet to drawbridges and foreign visitors in Tokyo between 1850 and 1900, a period when the city was opening to Western travelers after more than two centuries of tightly restricted contact. The dating is uneven, though. The record gives 1750, but the artist, Isoda Koryūsai, is listed as active from 1764 to 1788, the years he was producing the woodblock prints he is best known for. A botanical tag may mean the drawing is a study of plants rather than a finished scene.
