This drawing is catalogued under the subjects of drawbridges in Tokyo and foreign visitors to the city, which sets it apart from the botanical and figural prints around it. The record is inconsistent, though. It gives a date of 1750, yet credits Isoda Koryūsai, who was active from about 1764 to 1788, and the Tokyo subjects belong to a period after the city took its name in 1868. Koryūsai was an Edo-period artist known for woodblock prints of women and landscapes, so the attribution and date should be treated as provisional. The drawing's value lies in what it shows of the city's waterways and the foreigners who came to see them, and in the question of how a catalog's dates can drift from the artist's working life.
