Its subject tags point to drawbridges in Tokyo and to foreign visitors there between 1850 and 1900, a pairing that places the drawing in the decades after Japan reopened its ports to Western trade and Edo became Tokyo. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, an Edo-period ukiyo-e artist active from 1764 to 1788, does not fit the 1750 date on the record, so the age of the work should be read as approximate. Koryūsai is best known for prints of courtesans and genre scenes, which makes a drawing with these later subjects worth studying for its style and for how it records the city.
