Catalogued under drawbridges in Tokyo and foreign visitors to the city, this drawing points to a specific urban setting, though the record gives few details about its maker or purpose. The attributed artist, Isoda Koryūsai, was an ukiyo-e painter and printmaker active from about 1764 to 1788, so the 1750 date and the 1850–1900 subject headings do not quite agree and are worth checking in the catalog. Drawbridges were a familiar feature of Edo's castle moats and canals, and the arrival of foreign visitors after Japan opened its ports in the 1850s gives the later subject heading its context.
