Catalogued simply as a "Japanese drawing," this sheet is tagged with subjects pointing to Tokyo's drawbridges and the foreign visitors who passed them between 1850 and 1900. That period follows Japan's reopening to Western trade, when Edo had just become Tokyo and foreigners began moving through the city in greater numbers. The record gives a date of 1750, yet it also places the artist's working years between 1764 and 1788, so the dating is probably approximate. Isoda Koryūsai was an Edo-period painter and printmaker known for images of women and everyday life, which ties the sheet to that late eighteenth-century tradition.
