A pen-and-ink drawing catalogued under a generic title, this sheet is tagged in the record with drawbridges in Tokyo and with foreign visitors to Japan in the decades from 1850 to 1900, though the catalog also lists it under botanicals and gives a date of 1750. Those details don't line up. The artist, Isoda Koryūsai, worked in Edo, the city later called Tokyo, between about 1764 and 1788, so the 1750 date is probably approximate. Its later subject tags point to the years when Western visitors were arriving after Japan reopened its ports, a period when drawbridges and canals were common sights for foreign observers.
