Among the Japanese drawings in this collection, this one is catalogued under drawbridges in Tokyo and foreign visitors to the city between 1850 and 1900, though the record also lists it under botanicals, so the subject is worth checking against the drawing itself. The attribution to Isoda Koryūsai, an ukiyo-e painter and printmaker active from about 1764 to 1788, sits uneasily with the 1750 date, which predates his working years. Foreign visitors to the city, then called Edo and later Tokyo, often sketched bridges and waterside scenes during the decades after the country reopened to outside trade, which makes the subject a useful window onto that period.
