A stereograph card from 1875, numbered 152 and issued by the publisher William Isaac Marshall, this view shows Savannah, Georgia, as it looked in the years after Reconstruction began to give way to the postwar New South. Albumen prints like this one were mounted in pairs so that viewers using a stereoscope saw a single image with depth, a popular parlor entertainment in the 1870s. Savannah, founded in 1733 and laid out around its famous squares, was a busy port city, and cards from this period offered out-of-town audiences a glimpse of its streets and civic life. The record itself is brief, so the scene's specific details are best read from the print.
